Who is Jesus?

Many have argued that Jesus was a great moral teacher and nothing more, an argument C.S. Lewis, an atheist turned well-known theologian, says is absurd: “A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic – on a level with the man who says he’s a poached egg – or else he would be the Devil of Hell.”

While Jesus was a great moral teacher on earth, He was, and is, far more. While called by many titles in the Bible – Son of God, Savior, Messiah, King – Jesus can simply be defined in one word—God. Jesus is God. He is a member of the Godhead along with God the Father and the Holy Spirit. He was present during the creation of the world (Genesis 1:26) and He currently sits at the right hand of God in heaven (Acts 7:55-56).

Jesus in History

While still fully God, Jesus came to earth in the form of a human man in order to rescue mankind from sin. How? He was born of Mary through virgin birth. Though tempted, he lived a perfect and sinless life. As an adult he performed miracles and called men of all backgrounds to be His followers (i.e. disciples). These men were close witnesses to His ministry. When the time came, as prophesied hundreds of years prior, Jesus was crucified on a cross for proclaiming to be the Son of God. Though fully capable of saving Himself, Jesus chose to die this gruesome death. Why? Because God is holy, just, and cannot allow the sins of the world to go unpunished. Instead of allowing us to face the judgement for sin (which is eternal death and separation from God), Jesus died in our place and paid the debt for all sins past, present, and future.

But death is not where this story ends. After giving up His spirit on the cross, Jesus was buried in a tomb, where three days later He rose from the dead! After spending time with His followers, Jesus ascended into heaven where He remains until He comes back to judge the world one final time.

A record of all of this and more is found in the first four books of the New Testament in the Bible. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, also known as The Gospels, outline the life of Jesus while He lived on earth.

Jesus Today

While Jesus is a historical figure, His work is not past tense. Jesus is alive and working in our lives today! This is not only a story about who Jesus was and what He did, but about who Jesus is and what He is doing. The Book of John gives seven “I Am” statements for who Jesus is and how He works in our lives:

  •         “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35-48): Jesus is the source of life and spiritual nourishment. Jesus came to earth from heaven to sustain His people.
  •         “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12, 9:5): In a world darkened by sin, Jesus is the light. All those who walk with Jesus are promised to walk in the light of goodness and hope.
  •         “I am the gate” (John 10:7): Jesus is our gateway to eternal life in heaven. It is only through belief and acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord that we may, one day, spend eternity with God. There is no other way.
  •          “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11-14): Jesus is our protector. Like a shepherd lays down his life for his sheep, Jesus laid down His life to rescue us from our sin. He knows us because we belong to His flock and He watches over us unceasingly.
  •          “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25): Jesus is our eternal hope for everlasting life. Just as He died and was resurrected to life, we too, if we believe and accept Him into our lives, will receive eternal life with Him in heaven after we die.
  •          “I am the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6): Jesus is the only way to the Father. His life and His teachings are to become truths in our own lives as we grow to become more like Him.
  •          “I am the true vine” (John 15:1-5): Jesus is our source of goodness. He has called us to abide in Him and grow closer to Him so our lives may reflect His nature.
